HYAKKA craft ↔ industry

Kawashima Selkon Textiles is a fabric manufacturer, which originated from the Nishijin area of Kyoto, Japan.  We have been in business for 177 years. We are a unique textile maker due to our utilization of both traditional and advanced weaving techniques.  Our products feature items such as the obi (sash) for kimono, stage curtain、and festival curtain, as well as interior fabrics for hotels and public facilities.

The “craft ⇄ industry” installation in 2019 was our first time to exhibit at the Milan Design Week. We exhibited one of our symbolic designs, the‘Hyakka’ (a hundred flowers), drawn by the Rimpa artist and craft designer Kamisaka Sekka.  

Our display also showcased an assortment of materials woven by a variety of techniques ranging from traditional hand weaving to state-of-the-art machine weaving, blending both Japanese traditional craft and modern technologies.
