Sleeping in a Futuro House in California

It is one of several futuristic architectures around the world designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. Thanks to Airbnb, you can spend a night in it.

Airbnb has made available one of the historic UFO-shaped homes designed at the turn of the sixties and seventies It is the Area 55 Futuro House designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen in the heart of California's Joshua Tree desert.

The architecture of the building is reminiscent of a spaceship, rising five metres above the ground thanks to a supporting structure of stakes. It has two beds, one bathroom and can accommodate up to four guests. The cost of accommodation is about 200 dollars per night.

These architectures landed from the future were designed by Matti Suuronen in 1968, one year before the Apollo 11 moon landing, and conceived as portable mountain chalets in snowy areas. The prefabricated structures made them easy to place, while the rounded roof served a specific function: it allowed the snow to slide off without accumulating. Up until 1973, around a hundred were built, thanks to Suuronen's patent, and those that still exist today are well documented on the Futuro House website designed by Simon Robson.
