An immersive lighting installation with traditional and contemporary Japanese patterns for DNP (Dai Nippon Printing) showed in Milan Design Week 2019.

AtMa focused on DNP’s extremely valuable scanned archive of Japanese traditional patterns and their contemporary patterns for the concept, “Time Printing”. With their data, AtMa’s challenge was how to present the patterns and how people can engage with patterns emotionally.

This exhibition reveals “Edo-Komon” - traditional patterns that reflect people’s ideas in their daily lives - and “MiDCiD” - Contemporary Japanese Patterns and Colors that is reconstruction of traditional Japanese pattern / colours - by laser engraving them onto layered transparent acrylic panels based on timeline.

The engraved patterns are illuminated using by refraction of light with gradation colours in carefully programmed certain rhythm to make patterns emerged. The superb harmony of  lighting effect and laser engraved fine patterns immersed people in the installation with emotional feelings as if the lighting breaths life into the patterns.

History and Tradition are results of piling up every second, every moment. They have a depth as like a geological stratum. The traditional “Edo Komon” is in the flow of time in the past. The contemporary design “MiDCiD” is that in the future. The timeline of various design will appear while walking into the space.

Our thoughts are passing on traditional ideas and historic concept to next generations through design that is connecting past and present with information.

This installation showcased new value propositions created with advanced technologies that exceed the traditional boundaries of printing as well as DNP’s long-standing ambition to contribute to society by leveraging diverse information and printing formats that communicate both traditional and contemporary values.
